My FORMER* Plane: 2002 American Champion Super Decathlon 8KCAB

*SOLD on August 27, 2024

There's an old saying about owning an aircraft: "There are two great days in the ownership of an airplane: The day you buy it, and the day you sell it."

That is a myth.

In reality, I was very sad to sell my Decathlon.

After nearly 12 years of ownership, I decided to sell my beloved Decathlon, my ninth airplane. I'm still at the top of my game as far as piloting skills are concerned. But I'd rather quit piloting my own plane now, wishing I had flown the Decathlon another year or two, than regret having sold it sooner.

A year ago, I gave up Young Eagle flying. (See the 58-second YouTube video--search "700thYE" on the YouTube web site.) I've also given up aerobatics, night flying, and giving flight instruction. The only flying I do now is practice take-offs and landings at nearby airports, keep my skills up on non-aerobatic commercial maneuvers, and meet fellow aircraft owner/friends at neighboring airports for lunch. It was time to give up this marvelous plane to someone who could put it to better use. I'll still rent planes from a Livermore Airport Fixed Base Operator until I decide completely hang it up as a pilot.

Being a pilot and flight instructor has brought so much joy to my life. In many ways, it has been my life.
